Hey, I’m Mohamed-Zain. I’m a playwright, screenwriter and cultural producer.
As a playwright, I’m currently under commission to Royal Court Theatre for my debut play, Blue Mist. My second full-length play, Zidane of the Ends was performed at High Tide Theatre’s Inventing the Future festival in October 2021. Other writing credits include Emily (GLITCHED) In Paris (part of the Royal Court Theatre’s Living Newspaper series) and LOOT, (part of Royal Court’s SW1 Open Court scheme) performed at the Jerwood Theatre downstairs. I am represented by Rachel Taylor at Casarotto Ramsay & Associates.
As a cultural producer, my background is a mix of creating and funding d.i.y cultural projects, programming sold-out events in informal and formal spaces, designing artist development opportunities and action-orientated research. My creative practise varies from producing and directing an award-winning short film, The Moon Is A Meme (written by Zia Ahmed) to creating and co-editing a zine called Pipe Dreams documenting shisha lounges in North West London.
I’ve also pioneered new artist development opportunities - receiving support from Paul Hamlyn’s Ideas & Pioneer fund to pilot ‘MFest Writers Lab.’ A programme of support for Muslim writers in collaboration with Soho Theatre which is on-going and now being led by the charity, Maslaha.
I’m a Churchill Fellow after publishing research on ‘building economies for community arts.’ This led to my current role as a Culture & Community Spaces at Risk Officer with the Greater London Authority.
"Zain is a true impresario. From his imagination direct into our societal consciousness. Zain’s ability to elegantly draw cultural through lines between the local to the global demonstrates an artist striving to re-write a new version of the world that is both uncompromising and filled with a new truth. He is our present, our future, and our truth."
